10 Steps to change your bad habits

How often have you regretted for surrendering yourself once again to bad habits? Maybe you spend weekend at home watching TV, or smoke cigarettes, drink too much, or procrastinating important decision. We all know that bad habits harm us and our family, but still cannot control them. This article is about changing your bad habits and making your life worth living.

As mentioned in Wikipedia, Habits are routines of behavior that are repeated regularly and tend to occur subconsciously. As it is happening subconsciously, many a times we don’t even realize that we have a bad habit. This is one of the major reasons that we can’t control it. Other reasons include managing stress. Many people become victim of stress and they don’t know how to manage it properly and they fall in the trap of smoking or drinking.

We all want to control our bad habits, but it requires commitment and dedication. Below are some of the steps which help you in overcoming your bad habits and changing your life.

One at a time – I know that you have a long list of bad habits, but do not try to break them all at once. Take one habit at a time and focus on it. Do not try to climb a mountain with one jump. It is impossible. Take small steps and you will hoist your winning flag on top of it.

Announce it – Go and tell the entire world that you are going to work on your bad habits. It has many benefits like psychologically you will be afraid to take step back and you might get help from others.

Assign a reason– It is very important that you have a motivation to change the bad habit and that can be achieved by assigning a reason to it. Like Healthy life is a reason for controlling smoking. If you want a stronger one, then you can assign better health for your child. If you stop smoking, then he will not have to suffer because of your bad habit.

Make a plan – You definitely need a plan to break your bad habits. Plan can be a set timeline and simple steps you need to take every day. Write it down and make sure you stick to it.

Trigger – Trigger is some action that you will take when you are about to surrender to bad habit. Like if you have habit of thinking negatively, then you will say the word STOP in mind to restrict it there. Find triggers for your bad habits and use it for your good.

Replace with new – It is difficult to keep our mind empty. So we have to replace our old bad habits with new good habits. It will change our focus and we will have to put less effort.  Like replace habit of eating junk food with the habit of eating healthy food.

Take the help – Many a times it is not easy to change years old bad habits. In that case we should take help from others. It can be from family or friends or from counselor. It has been found that some habits were formed due to emotional issues. Therapist can help you in dealing with those emotional issues. Do not hesitate to ask for help.

Follow disciplineDiscipline is the keyword in breaking old bad habits. We have to follow same steps every day. Don’t allow excuses to come in the way of your better life. If according to your plan you have decided that you will cut down TV time from 3 hours to 1 hour then stick to it every day. Even if you have your favorite movie or serials coming on TV.

Mind group – Create a mind group of people who want to get rid of same bad habits. It has tremendous impact that is why support groups are so successful in overcoming drinking habits. Find one for you and see the change. If you are not able to find support group, then find people who has same problem and create one.

Celebrate – It is very important that we acknowledge that we have broken the years old bad habits. This will help in improving your self-confidence and making you feel good. Believe me it is a big achievement to control your mind and you deserve a pat on your back.
